4 Signs you have a silverfish problem

HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY OF THESE?

1. Seeing a live Silverfish

Seemingly obvious, but you may not realize they are a problem unless you can accurately identify a silverfish. Silverfish are up an inch long, wingless insects that have flexible, slippery scales on their body and resemble a fish. They are shaped like a teardrop and range in color from brown-gray to bluish-silver. Since they are nocturnal, you may not see them often, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t around.

2. Silverfish Droppings

Silverfish droppings are fairly unique, so it’s useful to know and can sometimes be helpful to identify them. Their droppings resemble small, black peppercorns and are found in areas where silverfish frequent like kitchens, basements, garages, wardrobes and drawers. Without careful examination, silverfish droppings could be easily missed or brushed aside as general dust or debris.

3. Silverfish Damage

Probably the most common and easiest way people stumble upon a silverfish infestation is by finding damage that they have caused. Silverfish love to eat starch like papers, book bindings, adhesives, wallpaper, and even clothing and linens. If you holes chewed through items like these, you might be dealing with a silverfish problem and should seek professional assistance.

4. Shedded Skin

Throughout the Silverfish’s life cycle these insects shed their skin. Coming across these outer shells that are small and delicate, can be another important clue to a possible infestation with proper examination. Like many other insects, the silverfish bug shed their skin as they go through their lifecycle.  The most likely places to find silverfish shells would be in the kitchen, bathroom, wardrobes or drawers.
